A long awaited album of the super-r’n’r-gods-project Them Crooked Vultures, withDave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters), John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) und Josh Homme (Queens Of The Stone Age) is out in 2 weeks time.
But the first single New Fang already reached my mailbox and all I can say: you get what you expect. The r'n'r awesomeness which is doomed to be a superhit. That is: apart from the lyrics, which are – hmm – somewhat, well more a mash up of different words, than lyrics. :-)
Sing along:
“new fang, no thing, i debate, to berate, buy the saki, now i want another stand up, step aside, open wide, hangin out, not until the feelings gone one two, yes i do, wanna learn, take a dose, gettin comfortable blue slips, blood sex sweat, come and go, i think its one they gotta know
Sometimes you break a finger on the upper hand think you got me confused for a better man Sometimes you break the finger on the upper hand Say youve got me confused ahhh I ain't a better man
No slack, cadillac, couldnt quit, gun slaps, oh its a takeback accept, what i left, far behind in a time when my mind was like a landmine tailgate, by the lake, too much too young everybody gotta go along tyrant, no show, another left so you gotta roll
Sometimes you break a finger on the other hand Said you got me confused with a better man Sometimes you break the finger on the upper hand I know you got me confused ahhh”
Wake up, get up, go to work. Wrong. Wake up, get up, put in the new Wolfmother album “Cosmic Egg”.
That is what I call rock’n’roll. :-)
Though the real rock’n’roll lies in the fact that it seems like only a few months ago that I have posted a sad piece of news, about Wolfmother splitting up. Looking up, it was precisely in August 2008, thus 14 months ago (speaking of the time flying…).
So we are talking about the astonishing 14 months to
a) get over a break-up,
b) find new band-mates,
c) write new songs,
d) practice and record the new songs.
A piece of cake for the hairy Andrew Stockdale, it seems.
Of course, all of this would be put down by everyone with a need of expressing her musical opinion if the mentioned work of art, were a piece of crap. But Mr.Stockdale is one talented guy and this new album could easily be one of his most successful.
It is slightly softer and easier-to-love-on-the-first-sight than his former works, but it is still far away from cheesy. Heavy on guitars where the guitars should be and full of hippiesque melodies, where the melodies should be. A mixture made in (70s’) heaven.
I am a blissfully happy person today: Dinosaur Jr.* are back !!!
The new single "Over It" from the album "Farm" sounds like J.Macis & Co. are supposed to sound in their best-of moments at the best-of 90s. Musically they didn't loose none of their mojo from back then (and the teenage-angst vibe is long replaced with optimism and funny).
Check out what must be the coolest of the old-school videos I have seen in a long long time.
P.S. My ears are still pounding with the sound of 18 guitar amplifiers from their performance in Wiesen, August 31st 2007. What a band!
* One of top 5 most influential band in the life of teenage Miss Ana in the period 1992-1999 and a rare band where she still managers to flip out with the same teenage enthusiasm.
DAILY BLOGPosted by MissAna Apr 11, 2009 21:05:25 ...the fact that I went to this show. ...the fact that this show happened in the Vienna's ARENA (THE punk place if there is one). ...the fact that there were quite some familiar faces in the audience.
But I wouldn't want to have missed it. Ladies and gents, the most likeable and very humourous German Schlager-singer, who's got it all: the haircut, the style (silver glitter suit!!) and a breast hair toupee. Mister DIETER THOMAS KUHN.
Where have I been so long? That’s a mystery that shall not be revealed. Whoaa-ha-ha.
Joking. I mean, who am I to keep things disclosed?
What happened, is that A LOT happened. There was a weekend in Amsterdam, there were Mando Diao in Vienna (what a night!), there were some fab music shows, friends, family, party, reading, sleeping…. you know, 'things' that make life fun and time pass very fast. Apart from that I was kind of stressed keeping my deadlines for the music magazines I tend to put my salt in every now and than, so RockMISSes had to suffer. Sorry with capital S.
But that’s all gonna change now. The spring has arrived, the spring sleepiness is gone, and I have put my favorite red, white and black stripes on (funily, today I actually AM wearing red-white-black outfit. Wicked.).
And the reason I am back is to tell you about an awesome album and an awesome gig.
The first one is SKY LARKIN. Band from Leeds with a front-girl and beautifully powerfull sounds. Whoever gets hearttumbing hearing early 90s Boston sounding bands, will love Sky Larking immediately. And by the way, they are also awesome live band, with plenty of energy and charms. Gotta love it.
Secondly, my new discovery: DELTA SPIRIT from California. Last night they played in B72 in Vienna, and if I knew that they would be that awesome, I would have told you about them before. Great musicians, huge melodies, lovely Bruce Springsteen-meets-Tom Waits-voice and very very lovely people. They have quite some buzz going on in USA & Canada, and it seems that UK & Europe are finally catching up too. Still a long way to go to get some significant presence, but if they don’t do it, I don’t know who will. After the show the band joined our table outside and we chated among other things mainly about – tennis. Who would have thought!
If there is one perfect way of spending a relaxed weekend, then I'll subscribe to this one: party like there is no tomorrow on Thursday evening, spend a tough day in the office on Friday, go home and chill out with your loved one until Sunday (food, movies and a lot of sleep) and go to a great gig on Sunday night. On Monday you will feel fresh like a spring daisy. That's at least how I feel today, wahey!
But possibly a reason for this was the quality of the mentioned party and the gig.
FMS press conference on Thursday announcing the moving of the Frequency festival to St.Pölten, instead of Salzburg did leave us all in a slight state of suprise. For my side, I am rather curious than sad. Changes are good and especially after many years of fun & rain in Salzburg, I am glad that we have something new to explore and fall in love with. Frequency 09, here we come! :-)
Falling in love with something new was also the motto of last night's gig at Vienna's Flex. The Gaslight Anthem, supported by Frank Turner and Polar Bear Club were all new to me gig-wise.
Polar Bear Club - the emo punk band from the US were suprisingly good. Nice sound, tight play and a lot of energy on the stage.
Frank Turner was lovely and great fun. It is amazing how sometimes one single person with a guitar can capture the entire room and make you feel like you are on a stadium gig. Ok, maybe I am exaggerating here... but Frankie was really suberbe, inspite his "wild night out with z Germans in Munich the nigth before" (and inspite the fact he did not play "Reasons Not To Be An Idiot", hm..)
Here is a taste of him on stage (sorry for the stupid angle, haha).
Last but not least, The Gaslight Anthem made sure we all understood why they are called "the next big US thing". Their mixture of Bruce Springsteen's Americana, the classic rock guitars and the punk rock party enegery is surely unique. The audience in the packed Flex were holding their hands up and singing along to every single song (which did suprise me...). I knew only 2 songs, but at least I have a few months time to learn all those lyrics and prepare myself for their performance at this years NOVA ROCK festival. You will find me there, in the 3rd row of the wavebreaker in front of the main stage...
My favorite band DOVES show signs of live and have finally set the date for the release of their upcoming album "Kingdom of Rust". It's APRIL, 6th - in UK.
And according to the interview they gave to XFM Radion, they will tour in UK in the spring and then hit the summer festivals. Fingers-bloody-crossed that I will get a chance to see them somewhere around here too.
You can also listen to their new single "Kingdom of Rust" under the same link.
DAILY BLOGPosted by MissAna Feb 13, 2009 23:34:43 Being probably the last person on Earth that hadn't seen the movie ONCE yet, I decided to change that fact and watch it tonite. It wasn't really a plan to see this movie on a Friday night, but more of a spontaneous urge. But somehow it felt like it had to be tonite.
So as always, putting the typically-me pinch of "there is some more meaning to it other than the obvious", I can say that not only does this move impress me, it also inspires me to spend more time playing my piano. And if I stretch the "meaning" even more, it might be that watching this movie will be directly responsible for my fullfilling the number one item on my list. Fingers crossed.
You might doubt the grammatical corecteness of the above blog title, but I count that you get my point. And if you followed my advice some weeks ago and went to see the Scottish wild kids Dananananaykroyd supporting Kaiser Chiefs on their Vienna's gig last Saturday, you would have most surely taken your socks off in awe of their performance.
What a refreshment in dull grey February Vienna!
What an energy!
And what a surprise this act must have been to the mixed & mostly mainstreamy Kaiser Chiefs audience. I guess the most common face expresion was the "raised eyebrows-look"- but some of them sure enjoyed it.
The indie version of the "wall of death" (=run into eachother and hug) definitely hit it right at the spot. Pitty I didn't film it.
But at least you get to see the first song of their set. Yaay yaaay. :-)
